I can’t even begin to tell you how nice it is waking up next to a warm body again. I know it was only one day without it, but I didn’t realize how much of a difference it made.
Without delay, I ran up the stairs, Glasnosh in tow. When I got to the top, I recognized the area. I knew where the stairs were, not I just have to get there. Sting started glowing blue again, and I could sense a goblin in another unknown area. I figured I would play it safe this time, and casted my spell to detect monsters. I only sensed one other monster. Here’s hoping it’s going to be as easy as it looks.
I start off down the hallway, and quickly encounter the other monster I had detected. It is a cloud of black smoke in a vaguely human shape, with the standard glowing red eyes. It has sharp looking claws, and is holding a longsword in one hand.
It swings the sword at me, then points at me and curses. It’s other hand scratches my face. It keeps up a barrage of attacks. Once I get a chance to move, I swipe at it with my dagger. I plunge it into the misty torso and feel resistance. I assume that I hit something, and that it can be hurt. I endure another series of rapid attacks, fending off what I can until I get another chance to strike. I slash at it, and prepare myself for the responding attack. The wight pauses it’s attacks and curses to heal itself. I swear, and strike at it again. After another flood of bad sword swipes and feeble scratches, I stab it a final time. The smoke dissipates, the sword and a knife fall to the floor with a muffled clang.
I run towards the stairs, not stopping to look into the rooms I pass. I see a fountain in the corner of my eye, but ignore it. I stop only long enough to kill the goblin who steps out in front of me. Sting calms down, and I make it to the stairs.
A cloud of fog is covering the steps. I take a step forward, then hesitate. I throw a dagger towards it. The dagger sinks into the fog, then falls. I throw another dagger. I wish I had picked up the knife the wight had dropped. I fling the few darts the nymph left me when a dog walks in through another door. I take a careful look to make sure it’s not Fritz, then zap it. The fog slowly glides towards me, and the dog runs up to me. I zap the dog again, killing it, then move around the fog to retrieve my weapons. Once I’m far enough away, I throw everything I have at it again. This time it’s a rothe that walks in on us. I blast it, and gather up my weapons again. The cloud of fog manages to survive my first dagger, but when the second one hits, it slowly fades away. I gather up my weapons a final time, and blow the whistle, hoping Glasnosh will hear, and come. I don’t want to wait any longer than I need to before going upstairs.
She still doesn’t come. I run up the stairs, cast my spell for detecting monsters, and see that both my pets are safe. I decide they will be okay while I go back down and get that stupid cat, and maybe look around a little.
The first room I come across has a kitchen sink in the middle of the floor. I just look at it for a solid five minutes. I’m not sure if you quite understand. It’s a kitchen sink. With taps and a faucet and everything. The drainpipes go down into the floor.
I get over my shock, and notice another piece of metal on the ground. I take a deep breath, and bend down to touch it.
I see a knight, fully dressed in shining armour. He’s swinging his sword at a scorpion. It seems to be an even fight. The knight can do a lot of damage, but he can’t hit the fast little bugger, and the scorpion is getting a lot of minor hits and stings in. Suddenly, the knight goes rigid. He’s been poisoned, but it must be a deadly poison, he looked plenty healthy just a moment ago. He falls to the ground and the scorpion scuttles away. The vision fades.
When I finally decide to move on, I quickly manage to explore the rest of the area without incident. I’m a little worried though, there’s probably a scorpion out there, waiting for me. Those pieces of metal usually mean something. I cast my spell of detect monster again, and don’t see it anywhere.
I do know where my cat is now though. I head over there to try and get the bugger to come with me. Along the way I see what I think is a ghost. It has a bit more substance than a ghost though. The fight is serious, it’s attacks leave me battered and gasping for breath. It reaches out and touches me. I immediately feel weaker, and less powerful. I now know what it is. It’s called a wraith, and can be deadly. It will drain the life out of me if I let it. I switch to magic, and quickly kill it. I feel more experienced, back to the level I was before the fight. Good thing it only drained me once.
I look down, and see a showdy corpse on the ground. What the hell, I decide to chow down. What’s the worst that can happen? I feel more experienced again. Sweet. Instant promotion.
I finally make it to Glasnosh, and we head for the stairs. We get ambushed by a dwarf mummy. The fucking cat takes off while I’m fighting the mummy. The mummy isn’t strong enough to hurt me much, but it takes me awhile to hack away at it. When it finally crumbles, and soldier ant crawls over the discarded wrapping. Remembering the trouble I had with a giant ant, I blast away at it. The ant is relentless in attacking me, and I’m in a great deal of pain when I manage to finally kill it. I sigh in relief, but my joy is short lived. I see a creature I’ve only ever read about. One of the scariest things I could ever hope to meet. My blood freezes and I can’t think properly.
It’s a goddamn cockatrice. A weird combination of bird and lizard. It looks like a chicken with green leathery wings and a long lizard like tail. If I’m not careful, it can turn me to stone. I immediate blast it with magic. It doesn’t react, so I let loose another spell. This does the trick, and it falls over, the body slowly fading away.
I lean against the wall breathing deeply. That could have turned out worse. I look around for Glasnosh, hoping the she wasn’t caught up in a fight with that horrid creature. I’m too weak to go looking for her, so I stumble into the closest room, where I can see anything coming before it reaches me.
Glasnosh wanders in, and I ask her if she’s ok. She purrs at me, and I assume that mean everything is alright. I grimace at my wounds, but decide it’s time to go upstairs. Well, maybe a nap first. It won’t help me heal, but I will still feel better after some rest. Yes, that sounds wonderful, just a short little nap and then we can go on.
